Commerce actions and post-purchase controls

4 min readUpdated August 18, 2026

Assistant commerce tools act on live WooCommerce state. Enable only the actions the store can support and test them with real product types, taxes, shipping and payment configuration.

Product-card and cart actions

Enable WooCommerce integration under Settings → Products & Cart. Product cards can display current image, price, stock and action state. Add-to-cart accepts a product/variation and quantity, then returns the live cart count and total.

Test simple, variable, sold-individually, backordered, out-of-stock and zero-price products. A variation must be fully resolved before it is added. The assistant should never add a parent product when WooCommerce requires a specific variation.

Cart state can be read, quantities updated and items removed in the same on-site session. Confirm that mini-cart fragments, theme cart badges and the Assistant view agree after every action.

Complementary products

Enable Complementary products, set the maximum suggestions and choose whether proactive suggestions are allowed. Assistant uses live cart/product context and configured WooCommerce relationships rather than inventing compatibility.

Maintain upsells, cross-sells, categories and attributes in WooCommerce. Test one compatible and one deliberately incompatible request. If product compatibility is safety-critical, publish the rule in authoritative product data and do not rely on similarity alone.

In-chat checkout

In-chat checkout is opt-in. It can show the cart, customer/shipping fields, available shipping context and totals, and can create the WooCommerce order through a nonce-protected on-site route. Payment completion still follows the secure WooCommerce/payment-gateway flow.

Before enabling it:

  1. test standard checkout successfully without Assistant;
  2. verify tax location, shipping zones and required address fields;
  3. test guest and logged-in sessions;
  4. test a coupon, invalid coupon and changed shipping method;
  5. confirm the fallback checkout URL;
  6. ensure privacy and terms text is visible at the correct stage.

External iframe embeds cannot use checkout or cart actions. This is an intentional cross-site security boundary.

Order-status lookup

Order lookup requires the order number and verification of the customer’s billing email when needed. Failed lookups are throttled after repeated attempts to reduce brute-force discovery.

Test a valid order/email pair, a wrong email, a nonexistent order and the failure limit. Do not weaken verification to make support testing easier. The answer should expose only the minimal status information appropriate for the verified customer.

Back-in-stock alerts

Enable Back-in-stock alerts and configure email subject/body under Products & Cart. Confirm WordPress can deliver email before collecting real subscriptions.

When an out-of-stock product returns to stock, Assistant sends the configured notification, removes the pending email automatically and includes an unsubscribe path. Administrators can review and remove pending subscribers under NAI Assistant → Back in stock.

Test:

  1. an out-of-stock subscription with consent;
  2. the pending admin record;
  3. product stock transition;
  4. delivered email and destination;
  5. automatic removal;
  6. unsubscribe.

Use a domain-aligned sender and document retention in the site’s privacy policy.

Size & fit advisor

Enable the advisor only for categories with a maintained size chart. Configure metric/imperial unit, the WooCommerce size attribute name and per-category height/weight ranges.

The recommendation uses product sizes and configured chart ranges; it should not infer a medical or body-fit guarantee. Test boundary values, missing sizes, variation stock and a category with no chart.

Exit intent and re-engagement

Advanced settings can open the floating Assistant once when a shopper is leaving or has been idle on selected cart, checkout, product or shop pages. Re-engagement can display an optional existing WooCommerce coupon code.

Start disabled. When enabled, use a once-per-session rule, a meaningful delay and an easy dismissal. On general product/shop pages, idle re-engagement requires items already in the cart; cart and checkout pages use lingering itself as the signal.

Troubleshooting

  • Cart card changes but theme badge does not: inspect WooCommerce session/fragments and caching.
  • Variable product cannot be added: ensure every required variation attribute is selected and available.
  • Checkout totals differ: verify address, tax and shipping method were updated before comparing totals.
  • Order lookup is blocked: wait for the protected failure window after repeated invalid attempts; test with a correct billing email.
  • Stock email is not sent: verify product status transition, WordPress mail and pending subscriber state.
  • Size advice is absent: confirm the feature, category chart and exact size attribute.
  • Commerce actions are missing in an external embed: expected; use an on-site surface.

Verification checklist

  • Product/variation identity and stock are live.
  • Cart totals match WooCommerce after each action.
  • Checkout creates only an intentional, nonce-protected order.
  • Order lookup rejects unverified attempts.
  • Stock subscribers can be reviewed, notified and unsubscribed.
  • Size advice uses a real configured chart.
  • Proactive messages are measured, dismissible and not repeated.
